1553.3 Beyond Housing: The Comprehensive Community Revitalization Program in the South Bronx (Abridged)
Abstract:
Long synonymous with some of the worst urbanblight in the U.S., the South Bronx, throughout the mid-1990s, was significantly rebuilt and apparently revitalized. This case focuses on the institutions and people who led the rebuilding effort. The "comprehensive community revitalization" approach, led by a consortium of community groups, seeks to go beyound the physical reconstruction of the Crotona ParkEast section oft he South Bronx and to address the range of social problems in the neighborhood, among them commercial area decline, schools and health. The case is a vehicle for those interested both in urban issues--particularly in the comprehensive approach to them--and on the role of nonprofit and non-governmental institutions in community life.
